The Pentagon has directed US Central Command to prepare for a possible resumption of major military operations against Iran, according to a report by Axios, as President Donald Trump weighs his options ahead of upcoming elections.
The preparations come amid growing uncertainty over stalled US-Iran nuclear negotiations. Trump said on October 6 that he was no longer interested in reaching a deal with Tehran, although he acknowledged that Iranian officials were seeking an agreement to prevent a wider conflict.
US and Israeli officials cited in the report said military action could potentially take place before the US midterm elections, with Israeli elections scheduled one week earlier. However, no decision or specific timeline for an attack has been announced.
Any renewed US campaign could involve heavy strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities and other strategic targets. Officials also remain concerned that Iran could take preemptive action, particularly after the country experienced two surprise attacks.
The issue was reportedly discussed during a multi-hour meeting at Camp David involving Trump's senior national security advisers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the meeting publicly as part of broader long-term foreign policy planning.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts remain stalled. Qatari mediators are still awaiting Tehran's response to a US counterproposal that reportedly seeks additional nuclear concessions.
An Israeli official told Axios that the possibility of renewed combat operations has increased, although the chances of action before the elections remain uncertain. The official indicated that the likelihood could rise substantially after the US midterm elections.
