Manushi Chhillar recently shared a glimpse of her morning routine that includes methylene blue, saying the substance has helped with her energy and focus. The actor also clarified that the methylene blue shown in her video was prescribed and used under the supervision of her physician.
However, experts caution that methylene blue should not be treated like an everyday health or wellness supplement. It is a prescription medicine with established medical uses, including the treatment of acquired methemoglobinemia, a condition in which haemoglobin cannot effectively carry oxygen.
The drug also carries important safety warnings. The US Food and Drug Administration has a boxed warning about the risk of serious or potentially fatal serotonin syndrome when methylene blue is used with certain serotonergic medicines, including some antidepressants and opioids.
Methylene blue is also contraindicated in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency because of the risk of haemolytic anaemia. Other reported adverse effects include nausea, headache, neurological symptoms and hypersensitivity reactions.
That makes the source, formulation and dose particularly important. Products not intended for human medical use should not be consumed simply because methylene blue is being discussed as a wellness or performance aid.
Chhillar’s disclosure is therefore best understood in the context she provided: a prescribed product being used under medical supervision. It should not be taken as a recommendation for self-use or as evidence that methylene blue is a general-purpose supplement for energy, focus or fitness.
