Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has resigned, state media reported on Sunday, without providing a reason for his sudden departure.
Paknejad, who has served as the Oil Minister of the OPEC member nation since August 2024, steps down at a time when Iran’s economy is under severe strain from the ongoing seven‑month war with the United States. The conflict has disrupted oil exports, strained government revenues, and intensified pressure on Tehran’s energy sector.
Following his resignation, Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), has been appointed as the acting Oil Minister. Bovard is expected to oversee the ministry during this critical period, as Iran struggles to maintain production levels and navigate international sanctions.
Paknejad’s exit adds uncertainty to Iran’s energy leadership at a time when global oil markets are closely watching developments in the region. Analysts say the move could reflect internal disagreements over policy or the mounting challenges of sustaining Iran’s oil industry amid geopolitical turmoil.
