India could launch its own smartphone brand by October 2028, with phones designed and manufactured domestically, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at the NDTV World Summit 2026.

The goal is to move beyond assembling phones for international companies and develop Indian products backed by domestic intellectual property. However, designing a smartphone is technically challenging, as it requires integrating processors, cameras, displays, antennas, memory and power systems into a compact device.

Vaishnaw said the government had challenged Indian designers to develop printed circuit boards (PCBs), which connect electronic components. Two companies reportedly took up the challenge, and one company’s design was selected by a major US telecom service provider. The minister did not disclose the names of the companies.

Developing a homegrown smartphone brand could create opportunities for Indian technology firms and manufacturers. However, competing with established global brands will depend on product quality, software, pricing, reliability and customer support.
