The INDIA opposition bloc will hold its planned “public impeachment” event against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence in New Delhi on October 30, 2026, party leaders said.
The event is intended to serve as a curtain-raiser for a major INDIA bloc rally scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. The opposition has raised allegations of “vote chori” (vote theft) and plans to make electoral accountability a central theme of its campaign.
Congress leaders said the venue was shifted to Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg after attempts to organise the event at Ashok Hotel and Ramlila Maidan reportedly faced permission-related obstacles.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh confirmed that Kharge’s residence had been finalised as the venue. K.C. Venugopal said 21 parties in the INDIA bloc had planned the October 30 programme as a prelude to the November 1 rally.
The proposed event is part of the opposition’s broader effort to raise concerns about the conduct of elections and the role of the Election Commission. The allegations are politically contentious, and their merits depend on evidence and the relevant legal or institutional processes.
The November 1 gathering at Ramlila Maidan is expected to provide a larger platform for the alliance to present its concerns and mobilise supporters.
The planned “public impeachment” is a political event and should not be confused with a formal constitutional impeachment proceeding. The Chief Election Commissioner’s removal is governed by constitutional provisions, and a political gathering does not itself remove an officeholder.
The developments are likely to intensify the political debate over electoral transparency and the independence of India’s election machinery.
