Google has expanded voluntary employee exit packages to five countries as the technology giant looks to manage costs while increasing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The company confirmed to Reuters that it began offering the latest voluntary exit packages in June 2026 to some employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The offers form part of Google’s efforts to control rising expenses amid substantial spending on AI. However, the number of employees who have accepted the latest packages remains unclear. Reuters said it could not determine how many workers had agreed to leave under the programme. A Google spokesperson said some teams introduced voluntary exit programmes with severance in 2025. The company expanded the initiative globally to a limited number of countries in June this year, describing the move as a way to support its future priorities. The voluntary exit offers allow eligible employees to leave the company with severance rather than being subject to compulsory layoffs. The announcement does not establish how many positions Google expects to reduce or whether the programme will affect particular teams. The expansion comes as major technology companies continue to reassess spending and workforce priorities while competing in the rapidly developing AI sector. Google has been directing resources towards AI and cloud computing, areas central to its future business strategy. The company has not disclosed the acceptance rate for the latest round of offers.
