Delhi Police has intensified its social media campaign ahead of the October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar, identifying around 500 people and 200 social media channels as part of its efforts to counter online narratives, according to officials.
The move follows a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in July, during which police officials believed online content had portrayed the force negatively. The police’s perception management wing is now reviewing its earlier approach and working to increase engagement with its version of events.
An official familiar with the matter said the latest efforts were informed by lessons from the July demonstration. The campaign aims to present the police’s account of incidents and respond to content that officials describe as part of a “cyber warfare” effort.
As part of the strategy, police are circulating videos showing injured personnel and alleged clashes. Officials are also examining why their earlier social media posts failed to attract significant engagement.
The developments come ahead of another planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The police’s increased online activity highlights how social media has become an important arena for competing accounts of protests, public order and law enforcement actions.
Identifying individuals and channels does not, by itself, establish that they have engaged in unlawful activity. The nature of the monitoring, the criteria used to identify the accounts and any subsequent action would be important in understanding the scope of the campaign.
The police’s approach reflects a broader effort to shape public understanding of demonstrations through digital communication. How effectively the campaign reaches audiences—and how competing claims are independently verified—will remain central to assessing the information shared online.
