The Supreme Court has urged the Union government to consider making the three-language policy mandatory for Class 6 students from January 1, 2027, instead of applying it to the current batch midway through the academic year.

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made the suggestion while considering the implementation of the language policy in schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The court's observation came after the Centre indicated that it was reluctant to change its position on implementing the policy for the current Class 6 batch.

The Bench said introducing the requirement with only a few months remaining in the academic year could create logistical difficulties for students and families. It said the proposed January 1, 2027 start date was being suggested based on logistics and the balance of convenience.

Under the policy being considered, Class 6 students would study three languages, including two Indian languages.

The court's suggestion would effectively allow schools, students and families additional time to prepare for the change before the new academic session. The matter remains subject to further proceedings and any decision by the competent authorities.
