A recent survey by the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has triggered concern among learners over the possibility of charges being introduced for access to learning content that is currently available for free.

NPTEL later clarified that the survey was conducted to collect feedback from learners and was not an announcement of an immediate change to its existing free learning resources.

The survey led some learners to question whether government funding for NPTEL could be reduced in the coming year and whether the organisation was considering a move towards a self-sustaining model.

Concerns also emerged over the possibility of changes to certification examination fees and potential charges for accessing NPTEL's educational content.

NPTEL is a joint initiative involving seven Indian Institutes of Technology — IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee — along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The organisation also clarified that the survey did not indicate any imminent stoppage of funding from the Ministry of Education. The feedback exercise is intended to understand learners' views as NPTEL evaluates its programmes and services.
