Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will lead a 20‑km symbolic march in Leh next week to mark the first anniversary of civilian killings during Ladakh protests.

On September 24, 2025, four civilians were killed in police firing after demonstrations in Leh turned violent. Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike at the time, was later booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and jailed in Jodhpur for six months.

Originally planned as a march from Kargil to Leh, the padyatra has been shortened due to weather conditions. Wangchuk announced on social media that the symbolic march will take place on September 23, underscoring that September 24 will be observed as “Shaheed Diwas” in memory of those killed while demanding protection for Ladakh’s environment, culture, and democracy.

Ahead of the anniversary, the Ladakh administration announced compensation for the families of the four civilians killed, as well as for those injured during the protests for statehood. This fulfills one of the long‑standing demands of Ladakh’s representative bodies.

The march comes at a time when the political climate in Ladakh is warming, with renewed calls for safeguarding the region’s identity and ensuring democratic rights. Wangchuk’s symbolic padyatra is expected to draw attention to Ladakh’s ongoing struggle for recognition and protection.
