The University of Delhi (DU) has granted a one-time exemption from the 28-credit promotion requirement for students admitted during the 2025-26 academic year under the National Education Policy (NEP) Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF)-2022.

Under the earlier system, students had to secure at least 28 credits out of 44 credits available across the two semesters of the first academic year to qualify for promotion to the next year.

The latest notification from the DU Examination Branch removes this specific requirement for the 2025-26 batch. As a result, students who have completed their first year will not be denied promotion solely because they have earned fewer than 28 credits.

For instance, a student with 27 credits would ordinarily fall below the earlier threshold. Under the new one-time exemption, the student will not be prevented from progressing on the basis of the 28-credit requirement alone.

However, the relaxation does not waive all examination or academic requirements. DU has stated that the other provisions contained in its July 21 and September 2, 2025 notifications will continue to remain applicable.

The exemption is also not a permanent change to DU’s promotion policy. It specifically applies to students admitted in the 2025-26 academic year and does not automatically extend to future batches.

The 28-credit promotion criterion was originally introduced through a July 2025 notification following decisions of DU’s Academic Council and Executive Council. Its implementation was later shifted to the 2025-26 batch through a September 2025 modification.

The latest order therefore provides a batch-specific, one-time exemption, rather than scrapping the 28-credit system altogether.
