Street Fighter is heading toward its theatrical release with early box-office projections pointing to a strong opening weekend. The action-comedy film, based on Capcom’s popular video game franchise, is expected to make a notable debut and could quickly challenge the series’ existing worldwide box-office record.
The upcoming reboot arrives more than a decade after the previous live-action Street Fighter movie, adding to the interest surrounding its release. With Jason Momoa leading the cast, the film is also among the more anticipated video game adaptations of the year.
The franchise’s current benchmark comes from the 1994 Street Fighter movie, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile and featured Raúl Julia, Byron Mann, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Wes Studi.
Released in 1994, the first live-action Street Fighter film earned approximately $99.4 million worldwide during its theatrical run. As a result, the new movie would need to cross the $100 million mark globally to move ahead of that figure and establish a new franchise high.
The upcoming Street Fighter film is therefore entering theatres with two notable box-office targets: delivering the franchise’s biggest opening weekend and eventually surpassing its existing worldwide benchmark.
While projections indicate a potentially strong debut, the film’s final worldwide performance will depend on audience reception and its ability to maintain momentum beyond its opening weekend.
