Sri Lanka’s anti‑corruption watchdog has arrested Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in connection with alleged financial irregularities linked to her charity, the Siriliya Saviya Foundation.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) confirmed the arrest, stating that the investigation centers on the misuse of funds at the foundation. Shiranthi Rajapaksa was produced before court and has been remanded until October 13, pending further inquiry.
The arrest marks a significant development in Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to tackle corruption, particularly involving high‑profile figures connected to the country’s political elite. The Rajapaksa family has long been at the center of Sri Lankan politics, with Mahinda Rajapaksa serving as President from 2005 to 2015 and later holding senior government positions.
Critics argue that the case underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in charitable organizations linked to political families. Supporters, however, claim the move is politically motivated, reflecting the deep divisions in Sri Lanka’s governance.
As the investigation unfolds, the arrest of the former First Lady is expected to spark intense debate across the nation, highlighting both the challenges and importance of anti‑corruption measures in rebuilding public trust.
