Long-term mutual fund investments can produce significantly different outcomes depending on the fund, investment period and method used. A review of 13 flexi-cap funds with more than 15 years of history shows how lump-sum investments and monthly SIPs have compounded over time.
A ₹1 lakh lump-sum investment made at inception in HDFC Flexi Cap Fund would have grown to around ₹1.98 crore, while the same amount in Aditya Birla Sun Life Flexi Cap Fund would have reached nearly ₹1.89 crore. Franklin India Flexi Cap Fund turned the investment into about ₹1.52 crore.
SIP investments show another dimension of long-term compounding. A ₹10,000 monthly SIP in HDFC Flexi Cap Fund from inception involved total investments of about ₹38.1 lakh and grew to nearly ₹21.57 crore by September 28, 2026. Franklin India Flexi Cap Fund accumulated around ₹16.07 crore from approximately ₹38.5 lakh invested through monthly SIPs.
However, these figures should not be treated as a direct ranking because the funds have different inception dates. Taurus Flexi Cap, for example, dates back to 1994, while Aditya Birla Sun Life Flexi Cap started several years later but delivered a substantially higher since-inception CAGR.
SIP XIRR can also differ from lump-sum CAGR because SIPs invest across different market levels. Historical returns do not guarantee future performance.
