Jio Platforms has made history in the stock market, with its initial public offering (IPO) attracting approximately 1.39 crore applications, making it the first public issue globally to cross the one-crore mark, according to reports published after bidding closed on October 23, 2026.

The ₹30,213-crore IPO received bids for around 438.3 crore shares against 19.75 crore shares on offer, resulting in an overall subscription of 22.19 times. Total demand, including the anchor investor placement, crossed ₹7.4 lakh crore, according to exchange data reported by PTI. The application count surpassed the previous reported record of approximately 97 lakh applications for Waaree Energies’ IPO in 2024.

The strong response comes as Reliance Industries-backed Jio Platforms looks to expand beyond telecom connectivity into digital services, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The company plans to use a substantial portion of the IPO proceeds to repay borrowings at its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Jio Faces a Changing Telecom Landscape

While investor demand highlights confidence in Jio’s business, competition in India’s connectivity market is also evolving. Elon Musk’s Starlink is seeking to enter India’s satellite broadband market, potentially increasing competition in areas such as home internet, enterprise connectivity and services for remote locations.

In a recent report by Business Standard, Jio Platforms identified satellite broadband as a potential source of competition. At the same time, the company argued that satellite services could struggle to match the pricing of existing fixed broadband and wireless alternatives in India.

The debate has also brought attention to Jio’s mobile recharge prices. In July 2024, the company implemented tariff increases of around 12% to 27% across several plans. The move was widely linked to the telecom industry’s need to improve revenue and support investment in network infrastructure and 5G services, rather than being a response to Starlink’s later market entry.

What Comes Next for Jio?

Jio Platforms’ record-breaking IPO marks a major moment for India’s capital markets. However, investor demand for shares and the company’s future business performance are separate matters. As Jio expands into new technology services and satellite connectivity, its ability to maintain growth, manage costs and respond to competition will remain important areas to watch.
