Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that two commercial vessels were struck by drones in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Black Sea, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in the region.
Speaking after an emergency government meeting, Radev said the ships were attacked by multiple drones about 80 miles (128 km) off Bulgaria’s coast. One of the vessels, the Alfa Watan, flying the Togo flag, suffered catastrophic structural damage and sank immediately. The fate of its crew remains unknown, with rescue operations underway.
The second vessel sustained damage but managed to stay afloat, according to initial reports. Authorities have not yet disclosed who may be responsible for the strikes, but the incident has heightened fears of escalating tensions in the Black Sea, a strategic waterway already under pressure from regional conflicts.
Radev stressed that Bulgaria is coordinating with international partners to investigate the attack and ensure maritime safety. The incident underscores the vulnerability of commercial shipping lanes to drone warfare, a growing threat in modern conflict zones.
