Members of the transgender community in Chennai have spoken out against the online backlash targeting the recently released Tamil movie ‘Dorothy’, urging the public to appreciate the film’s intent rather than criticise it.
Released on September 25, the film has faced a wave of homophobic and transphobic comments on social media, with detractors questioning its portrayal of the community. In response, transpersons gathered in Chennai on September 28 to express support for the movie, stressing that it reflects their lived experiences and struggles.
Welcoming the film, several transwomen thanked director Karthik Subbaraj for portraying their realities with sensitivity and authenticity. They emphasized that ‘Dorothy’ is not just entertainment but a step toward mainstream representation, helping society understand the challenges faced by transpersons.
Community leaders appealed to audiences to see the film’s positive intentions, highlighting that cinema can play a powerful role in breaking stereotypes and fostering inclusivity. They urged critics to move beyond prejudice and recognize the importance of visibility for marginalized voices.
