Google had originally planned to deprecate Google Assistant on mobile in 2025, but the transition was later extended into 2026. The company announced its final timeline in August, setting the stage for the wider migration from Assistant to Gemini.
Recent user reports suggest that the change is now being rolled out more broadly. According to reports from users in the United States and Europe, Google Assistant has disappeared from devices and accounts, with Gemini becoming the primary assistant option.
The transition means users may no longer be able to switch between Google Assistant and Gemini through the usual assistant settings. However, some inconsistencies have also been reported during the rollout, particularly around connected devices and services.
For example, some users have reported that Google Assistant can still appear in certain situations involving Google Maps navigation and Pixel Buds, creating differences between the main Android assistant settings and connected-device behaviour.
Google’s shift to Gemini represents a broader move toward integrating generative AI into its mobile ecosystem. While Gemini is designed to provide more advanced AI-based assistance, the ongoing transition also shows that replacing an established assistant across Android and connected products can involve compatibility issues during the rollout.
