A shocking incident in Begusarai, Bihar has sparked outrage after a woman associated with a self‑help group was allegedly raped and brutally assaulted inside a hotel room on Sunday. Disturbingly, videos of the assault were later circulated on social media.
Police registered an FIR on Monday, but more than 24 hours later, the main accused remains at large, while one suspect has been arrested. Authorities revealed that the accused allegedly circulated the video using the victim’s own mobile number, which has since been blocked.
The crime took place at a hotel located along a National Highway stretch, barely three kilometers from the office of the Begusarai Superintendent of Police (SP) and within the vicinity of a police station and outpost — raising serious questions about law and order in the state.
The incident comes amid a spate of sexual harassment and assault cases in Bihar. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, RJD’s national working president, alleged that the state’s law and order machinery has “completely collapsed,” demanding accountability and stronger measures to protect women.
The case has reignited public debate on women’s safety, policing failures, and systemic accountability, with activists calling for swift justice and stricter enforcement of laws against sexual violence.
