The Supreme Court of India has agreed to list next week a petition seeking the suspension of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar from office, amid allegations of unilateral decision‑making within the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Appearing before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, senior advocate Vikas Singh along with advocates Sudeep Chandra and Mudit Gupta, representing petitioner Rakesh Kumar Singh, made an oral mentioning for early hearing. The plea urged the court to direct that Kumar should not exercise the functions of CEC until the final hearing is concluded.
The petition challenges Kumar’s alleged unilateral exercise of authority in the name of the ECI, raising concerns about transparency and institutional independence. The case comes at a time when the Election Commission has faced heightened scrutiny over its functioning, with opposition parties demanding accountability and reforms.
