Former Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik has called for a united political fight against the implementation of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026 (MMDR Act) in Odisha.
Leading a massive demonstration outside the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Patnaik accused the BJP governments at the Centre and in the State of showing an “indifferent mindset” toward the severe financial implications of the Act. He warned that Odisha could face massive revenue losses if the law is enforced, and urged all parties to resist its implementation.
Patnaik declared that he would fight for Odisha’s rights “till his last breath,” while BJD cadres demanded an immediate halt to mineral transportation from mines until the Act is rolled back. He also questioned the silence of the Odisha government, asking, “Why? Out of fear of whom?”
The MMDR Amendment Act has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that it centralises control over mineral resources, undermining state autonomy. For Odisha, a mineral‑rich state heavily dependent on mining revenue, the stakes are particularly high. Patnaik’s rally signals a renewed push to protect state interests and mobilise public opinion against the law.
