Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk has extended his support to the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed October 2 protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, calling it a movement for accountability and transparency in India’s electoral process.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Wangchuk said, “The whole idea of supporting movements for me is that these movements are on their own. So there are many people now for that issue, and I am happy to see that.”
While he expressed solidarity with the protest, Wangchuk clarified that he may not be physically present during the agitation. He emphasised that the strength of such movements lies in collective participation rather than individual presence.
The CJP has announced a nationwide protest beginning October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions. Wangchuk’s endorsement adds weight to the agitation, which has already drawn attention from civil society and opposition groups.
The activist, known for his environmental and social campaigns, said efforts to improve accountability in governance deserve widespread support. His backing is expected to galvanise more citizens to join the protest, highlighting growing concerns over electoral transparency in India.
