Mithun Chakraborty’s rise in Indian cinema was marked by years of hardship before he became one of Bollywood’s most recognisable stars.
The actor has recalled a difficult phase of his early life when finding enough food was a daily challenge. Instead of receiving payment, he sometimes danced at private parties in exchange for meals.
His National Award win for his debut film Mrigayaa brought early recognition, but it did not immediately translate into financial stability or regular film work. Mithun has spoken about periods when he had nowhere to stay and had to sleep on footpaths.
During those years, he also reportedly cleaned a gym in exchange for access to its washroom. At one point, he even lived in his car while trying to find a way forward in the film industry.
Mithun eventually left Bombay for a period and went to Ooty to run a hotel. However, his career in cinema soon regained momentum.
His breakthrough eventually transformed his circumstances. From struggling to secure basic necessities, Mithun went on to establish himself as a major commercial star with a career spanning decades.
His journey also included several prestigious honours, beginning with the National Award for Mrigayaa. His story remains an example of the difficult beginnings that preceded his eventual success in Indian cinema.
