The Ebola outbreak in Congo has crossed 8,000 confirmed cases, with health authorities facing growing challenges in containing the disease across multiple provinces.
According to the latest data from Congo’s health ministry, 8,067 cases had been confirmed and 3,901 deaths recorded as of September 26. The outbreak has spread across 63 health zones in seven of the country’s 26 provinces, putting the reported case fatality rate above 48%.
The outbreak was declared on May 15 and is linked to the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus. The response has been complicated by limited healthcare capacity, with health workers facing payment delays that have contributed to strikes during the outbreak.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that 50 health workers have died since the outbreak was announced, adding to pressure on an already stretched healthcare system.
The World Health Organization has warned that the continued high death rate, particularly deaths occurring within communities, points to difficulties in detecting cases early and ensuring timely access to appropriate care.
The situation is not uniform across the country. Some areas, including parts of Ituri and Haut-Uele provinces, have reported declines in confirmed cases. However, officials say the disease continues to spread in other areas, increasing its geographical reach.
The figures underline the scale of the ongoing Ebola outbreak and the challenges facing Congo’s health system as authorities work to improve case detection, treatment access and outbreak control.
