Recent changes to US visa rules are creating uncertainty for international students, particularly around visa processing, internships and post-study employment. However, demand for undergraduate education at the University of Virginia (UVA) has continued to grow.
Stephen D. Mull, UVA’s vice provost for global affairs, said undergraduate applications to the university increased 25 percent this year despite the changing immigration environment.
The US has introduced tighter scrutiny for international student visa applicants, including expanded checks of applicants’ online presence and additional requirements related to interviews and vetting.
During a visit to Delhi, Mull said UVA had been working efficiently to provide required documentation to newly admitted international students and help them navigate the visa application process.
The university’s experience comes as prospective international students weigh the changing conditions surrounding higher education in the US. Visa processing requirements, internship opportunities and rules governing employment after graduation remain important considerations for students planning to study abroad.
For Indian students in particular, the US remains a major destination for higher education. Changes in visa procedures can therefore affect both applicants and universities seeking to enrol international students.
UVA’s reported increase in applications indicates that interest in its undergraduate programmes has remained strong despite the uncertainty surrounding US visa policies.
