Senior BJP leader Smriti Irani has sharply criticized the Congress leadership, accusing it of undermining India’s electoral system by insisting on retaining deceased and duplicate names in the voter rolls.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Irani questioned why Congress continues to challenge the Election Commission of India (ECI) despite the Commission’s public clarification on the issue. “Given that the Election Commission has already explained the matter, why does the Congress leadership insist on retaining the names of deceased individuals in the electoral rolls?” she asked.
Irani alleged that the Congress, once established “to preserve the British Empire,” is now attacking constitutional institutions to compensate for its declining support among the people. “There could be nothing more shameful than this,” she added, accusing the Opposition of attempting to erode trust in India’s democratic framework.
Her remarks come amid heightened political tensions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has triggered a fierce debate between the ruling BJP and the Opposition. The BJP maintains that the process ensures electoral integrity, while Congress has accused the ECI of mass deletions and disenfranchisement.
