Panjab University (PU) has issued an advisory asking students to avoid believing or sharing unverified information about incidents on or around the campus. The move comes amid student unrest at Chitkara University and Lovely Professional University (LPU) following the circulation of claims on social media.
Issued by the Dean, University Instruction, the advisory directs chairpersons, directors and coordinators to communicate the instructions to students. The university said unverified information circulated through social media and messaging platforms could affect the peaceful and harmonious academic environment.
The advisory follows recent developments at Chitkara University in Rajpura and LPU in Phagwara. At Chitkara, police said no students were missing after campus violence and registered a daily diary report while investigating possible involvement of outsiders.
At LPU, protests followed social media reports concerning an alleged sexual assault. Police said the claims had not been established and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. The university subsequently suspended regular classes for 10 days and postponed mid-term examinations.
PU has asked students to rely on official university communications before accepting or sharing information. Students have also been advised to maintain peace and discipline and avoid participating in or supporting unlawful activities.
The university further encouraged students to report genuine concerns to their chairperson, head of department or other appropriate university authorities rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
