National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian has called for greater coordination among national commissions to strengthen the protection of human rights across India.

Speaking at a Statutory Full Commission meeting with representatives of seven deemed members of the NHRC, Justice Ramasubramanian stressed that collaboration could help launch meaningful initiatives for vulnerable communities. He proposed appointing a Nodal Officer to streamline coordination and suggested that the NHRC extend support to commissions lacking investigative resources.

He expressed concern over the absence of rehabilitation measures for mentally ill women engaged in begging, urging a review of policies for persons with disabilities. He also highlighted gaps in social security and insurance coverage for disabled citizens.

The seven deemed members include the National Commissions for Women, Backward Classes, Child Rights, Scheduled Castes, Minorities, Scheduled Tribes, and the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.

Meanwhile, NHRC special rapporteur Sayeed Ahmed Baba addressed officials in Mizoram’s Saitual district, stressing the need for public awareness on human rights, better counselling and de‑addiction facilities, and accountability among government officials whose work directly impacts citizens’ welfare.

The discussions underline NHRC’s push for a collaborative, resource‑driven approach to safeguard rights and address systemic gaps in India’s welfare framework.
