External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar has urged Global South nations to strengthen cooperation in tackling rising geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, climate shocks, and debt vulnerabilities.

Speaking at a meeting of Global South countries on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, Jaishankar stressed the need to address supply chain bottlenecks, finance gaps, and connectivity challenges. He warned against manipulation of energy prices, called for securing grain and fertiliser supplies, and emphasised fair trade practices.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of industrialisation, maritime security, and safeguarding seafarers, while urging responsible management of Artificial Intelligence transformations to prevent divisions.

On the sidelines, Jaishankar met Italy’s Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, discussing the Gulf situation, IMEC corridor, and Ukraine conflict, with both sides agreeing to expand trade ties.

At the India‑CELAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar celebrated India‑CELAC trade crossing USD 50 billion annually, stressing complementary strengths: India’s technology, pharmaceuticals, and digital capabilities, and CELAC’s critical minerals, sustainable energy, and agriculture resources. He proposed upgrading the Annual Business Summit from next year.

Jaishankar underlined that India’s engagement with the Global South goes beyond national interest, reflecting a commitment to shared prosperity and inclusive growth.
