Beleghata MLA and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh was attacked on Saturday while on his way to attend a rally addressed by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Serampore, Hooghly.
According to eyewitnesses, Ghosh’s vehicle was blocked by a mob at Sakherbazar in Uttarpara, where eggs, stones, and sticks were hurled at his car. Slogans were raised against him as the vehicle was vandalised. The incident has sparked political outrage, with TMC leaders alleging that the attack was orchestrated to disrupt Mamata Banerjee’s public meetings.
Reacting strongly, Mamata accused the BJP of attempting to silence Opposition voices. “If you have genuinely won in the elections, then why are you not allowing Opposition parties to hold rallies?” she asked, calling the attack a direct assault on democratic rights.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Bengal, where clashes between rival party workers have become increasingly common. TMC leaders have demanded immediate action against those responsible, while BJP leaders have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
The attack on Ghosh underscores the volatile atmosphere in West Bengal’s post‑poll landscape, raising concerns about political violence and the shrinking space for Opposition activities.
