The women, Jahanara Begum and Mumtaz Begum, were declared non‑citizens by a Foreigners’ Tribunal in 2019. However, the Gauhati High Court later set aside the tribunal’s opinion and directed a review of their citizenship status. Gogoi alleged that despite this judicial order, the women were sent across the border, raising serious concerns about human rights and due process.

Highlighting the issue, Gogoi urged the Ministry of External Affairs to coordinate with Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the women’s safe return. He stressed that the case reflects broader anxieties in Assam over citizenship disputes and the treatment of vulnerable individuals caught in the crossfire of legal and administrative processes.

The incident has sparked political debate, with opposition leaders accusing authorities of disregarding court orders and undermining constitutional safeguards. Gogoi’s appeal underscores the need for transparency and accountability in handling sensitive citizenship matters, especially in border states like Assam.
