Warner Bros. has officially set Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for a theatrical release on June 1, 2029, marking the first feature film in the popular Game of Thrones universe.
Directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon, the film will explore the beginning of Targaryen rule in Westeros. Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire world, the story will focus on King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros and the creation of the Iron Throne.
The project was first officially announced by Warner Bros. at CinemaCon earlier this year. A big-screen adaptation of Game of Thrones has been discussed for more than a decade, including earlier ideas about continuing the HBO series through films.
The original television series premiered in 2011 and concluded with its eighth season in May 2019. The franchise has continued through spin-offs, including House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Harris has previously directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and worked on Black Mirror and Mrs. Davis. Willimon is known for creating House of Cards and writing for Andor.
