CPI Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar has alleged that Delhi Police personnel were deliberately removing or concealing their identity badges before detaining protesters, raising serious concerns about accountability and transparency in law enforcement.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Kumar urged a time‑bound inquiry into the practice, citing repeated instances of violence, arbitrary detentions, manhandling, and unlawful actions by police during democratic protests. He argued that concealing identification violates both Supreme Court directives and Delhi Police Standing Order No. 51, which mandate visible identification when coercive powers are exercised against citizens.

Kumar stressed that identification is essential for ensuring accountability and protecting citizens’ rights. “Without badges, officers cannot be held responsible for excesses,” he said, warning that such practices erode public trust in policing and democratic institutions.

The allegations come amid heightened tensions in the capital, where multiple protests have been met with heavy police deployment. Civil society groups have echoed concerns, demanding stronger safeguards to prevent misuse of power.

The issue is expected to spark political debate, with opposition parties likely to press for stricter oversight of police conduct during protests.
