Tensions flared in the capital as around 150 protesters, including AISA national president Neha Bora, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, and activist Yogendra Yadav, were detained by Delhi Police during a march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest began at Patel Chowk and moved towards Jantar Mantar, drawing participation from prominent figures such as senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Nitya Ramakrishnan, and Pallav Sisodia, alongside student leaders. Security forces quickly intervened, deploying barricades and detaining demonstrators near the protest site.
AISA members alleged that police action turned aggressive, claiming that a male officer manhandled Neha Bora and another officer verbally abused her. These allegations, however, could not be independently verified at the time of reporting.
The detentions come amid a wave of nationwide protests calling for the ouster of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, with hundreds reportedly detained across multiple states. The movement has gained traction on social media, though activists allege increasing restrictions on online platforms.
Earlier in the day, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke suggested his social media account might be taken down after a post thanking former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for supporting the campaign was restricted.
The episode underscores growing unrest over electoral transparency and the Election Commission’s credibility, with students, lawyers, and activists uniting under a common demand for accountability.
