Microsoft has released Windows 11 version 26H2, also known as the Windows 11 2026 Update, for eligible PCs running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The update brings changes to the Start menu, taskbar and File Explorer, along with security and accessibility improvements.
One of the biggest changes is the redesigned Start menu. It now features a scrollable All apps section along with new Category and Grid views. The layout can adapt to different screen sizes, while users can choose how the Pinned, Recent and All sections are displayed.
File Explorer also gets several new features, including AI-powered actions. Users with the required Microsoft 365 subscription and Copilot licence can edit supported images or summarise documents stored on OneDrive and SharePoint without opening the files. Work and school users also get quick actions such as Open file location and Ask Copilot.
The update expands File Explorer’s support for archive formats, including uu, cpio, xar and nupkg files. Voice typing can also be used when renaming files.
Windows 11 26H2 adds further taskbar customisation, allowing users to position the taskbar at the top, bottom, left or right edge of the screen. A smaller taskbar option is also available.
Microsoft has additionally introduced taskbar support for monitoring AI agents, with Researcher in Microsoft Copilot currently listed as the first supported experience. The update is also designed to reduce the number of restarts needed for keeping Windows devices updated.
