Rima Das returns to the world of rural Assam with Village Rockstars 2, a coming-of-age drama that revisits Dhunu several years after the 2017 original. The film stars Bhanita Das as Dhunu and continues to explore her relationship with music, family and the natural world.
Now in her teenage years, Dhunu is no longer simply chasing a childhood dream. She faces the pressures of growing up alongside family difficulties, changing relationships and the environmental challenges affecting her village.
Music remains central to her identity, but the sequel gives greater space to the realities surrounding her. Floods, economic uncertainty and questions about development become part of Dhunu’s journey as she tries to hold on to the things that matter to her.
Rima Das continues her naturalistic filmmaking style, using rural landscapes and everyday moments to build the film's atmosphere. The story also places emphasis on the bond between Dhunu and her mother, played by Basanti Das, while examining the pressures faced by women within the community.
The film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in 2024, where it won the Kim Jiseok Award. It later had a theatrical release in Assam before expanding to several Indian cities from September 25, 2026.
With its focus on adolescence, nature, family and rural life, Village Rockstars 2 continues Rima Das’ exploration of personal dreams against a rapidly changing environment.
