US President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York tomorrow, aiming to push forward efforts for de‑escalation between Russia and Ukraine. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The talks follow a recent phone conversation between the two leaders, which Zelenskyy described as “important” and said had generated fresh diplomatic momentum. Trump reportedly urged Zelenskyy to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, linking the attacks to disruptions in global fuel supplies and rising diesel prices. According to sources, “the word diesel came up many times” during the call.

Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov, who also heads the country’s Foreign Intelligence Service, has been coordinating with White House envoys to arrange the meeting. Energy infrastructure has emerged as a critical issue, with Zelenskyy previously indicating Ukraine could suspend strikes on Russian facilities if Moscow guarantees protection for Ukrainian critical infrastructure.

The meeting is expected to explore pathways for reducing hostilities and reviving negotiations, as Washington seeks to balance energy stability with diplomatic efforts to end the war.
