India is positioning itself as a potential trusted base for semiconductor manufacturing as global chipmakers look to diversify their supply chains, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while inaugurating SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
Modi said the global semiconductor industry needs new manufacturing locations and described India as preparing to meet that demand. He also highlighted what he called the second phase of the country’s semiconductor journey.
According to the Prime Minister, India is moving beyond policy announcements and the construction of semiconductor facilities towards the commercial production of chips.
The government has been promoting semiconductor manufacturing and related capabilities as part of efforts to strengthen India’s position in the global electronics and technology supply chain.
The expansion of semiconductor manufacturing could also support the development of domestic capabilities across chip fabrication, packaging, design and related industries.
At SEMICON India 2026, the focus remains on strengthening collaboration between the government, semiconductor companies and technology ecosystem as India works to develop a larger domestic semiconductor industry.
The push comes as companies globally seek to reduce concentration risks in chip supply chains and establish manufacturing capacity across multiple regions.
