Japan has called on India to accelerate internal processing of the landmark UNICORN (Unified Complex Radio Antenna) naval radar agreement, signed during Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to New Delhi in July.
The pact, which involves transfer of advanced radar technology, is seen as a crucial step in strengthening India–Japan defence cooperation and enhancing maritime security in the Indo‑Pacific. Japanese officials emphasized that timely implementation of the agreement would allow both nations to deepen operational synergy and counter emerging regional challenges.
The UNICORN radar system is designed to provide cutting‑edge surveillance and detection capabilities, boosting naval preparedness against threats in contested waters. For India, fast‑tracking the deal is expected to significantly upgrade its naval infrastructure and align with its broader push for self‑reliance in defence technology.
Diplomatic observers note that Japan’s call comes at a time of heightened strategic cooperation between the two countries, with both sides committed to ensuring a free, open, and rules‑based Indo‑Pacific.
