The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have expanded their research collaborations with IBM to advance work in agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing and next-generation computing systems.
The collaboration builds on IBM’s existing partnership with IIT Bombay, which began in 2018. Researchers from IBM will work with faculty and students on Indic language models, multimodal AI, AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval.
A key focus will be improving multilingual AI capabilities for Indian languages through more efficient model adaptation and optimisation techniques. The teams will also explore multimodal AI applications for software programming education, human-AI collaboration and intelligent operations across hybrid cloud environments.
IBM’s collaboration with IISc, which began in 2021, will focus on agentic systems, AI applications and quantum computing algorithm development. Researchers will also explore AI models for energy analytics, including forecasting, anomaly detection and energy optimisation.
The quantum computing component will examine ways to connect quantum and high-performance computing through advanced workflows and quantum-HPC algorithms.
The expanded partnerships are also expected to create opportunities for students and researchers to work on interdisciplinary and industry-oriented challenges. The institutions and IBM said the collaborations will support scientific research, talent development and the development of computing technologies with potential applications in India and globally.
