Bhadrachalam Hospital Completes 400 Cataract Surgeries
A government hospital in Telangana’s remote tribal region has completed 400 cataract surgeries, expanding access to specialised eye care for patients who previously had to travel longer distances for treatment.
The Ophthalmology Unit at Area Hospital, Bhadrachalam, in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, reached the milestone after its dedicated ophthalmic operation theatre was established in December 2023.
A single ophthalmologist has played a key role in providing cataract surgery services at the hospital, helping patients from remote tribal communities access specialised treatment closer to home.
The hospital has also attracted patients from outside the district. People seeking cataract treatment have travelled to Bhadrachalam from Warangal and Karimnagar in Telangana, as well as from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The development highlights the role that specialist services at government hospitals can play in improving healthcare access in geographically remote regions. For communities living in tribal and rural areas, the availability of surgical facilities within a government healthcare system can reduce the need for travel to larger urban centres.
