Apple’s long-rumored smart home hub could be unveiled on October 13, according to a report, alongside a new HomePod mini and an upgraded Apple TV. The three devices are expected to highlight Apple’s revamped AI-powered Siri experience.
The smart home hub would mark Apple’s entry into a new product category and is reportedly expected to be the centrepiece of the company’s smart home lineup. The device could feature a 6-inch display designed to work either on a countertop or mounted on a wall.
The reported design is said to include a round metal base housing speakers and microphones, with an arm supporting the display. This would allow the screen to tilt and give the device a design somewhat reminiscent of Apple’s iMac G4. A separate wall-mounted version is also reportedly in development.
The HomePad is expected to use a USB-C power connection and reportedly will not include a built-in battery. The device could be offered in Apple’s standard grey aluminium finish.
Software is expected to be a major part of the product. The hub could run a new operating system designed around Siri AI, with iPad-like applications and features including a two-panel Messages interface.
Other reported capabilities include smart home controls, video calls, music playback, photo slideshows and intercom-style communication. Voice and facial recognition could also allow the device to identify individual users.
