The United States is positioning itself as a major source of India’s growing energy needs, a senior State Department official said, highlighting Washington’s new leverage in global oil markets.
“Now, with President Trump’s incredibly successful operation in Venezuela, we are moving into a better position that countries like India are going to be able to get access to that market,” the official noted, underscoring America’s ambition to expand energy exports.
India, one of the world’s fastest‑growing economies, has long sought to diversify its energy imports to reduce dependence on traditional suppliers such as Russia and the Middle East. The U.S. sees this as an opportunity to deepen strategic and economic ties with New Delhi.
The announcement comes just days after President Donald Trump signed into law the ‘Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’, authorising tariffs of up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas — a move that directly impacts India and China.
Analysts say Washington’s push to supply energy to India reflects both geopolitical strategy and economic opportunity, as the U.S. seeks to counter Russia and Iran while strengthening partnerships in Asia.
