Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for independent research on tax policy to become a more prominent part of public discourse.

Speaking at the eighth International Tax Conference on “New Age Taxation” in Bengaluru on September 16, Sitharaman said discussions on taxation should extend beyond the interests of individual sectors.

She emphasised the role of tax professionals in contributing to a broader policy discussion and said they should look beyond sectoral considerations while keeping the national interest in focus.

The Finance Minister’s remarks come amid continuing changes in India’s tax administration and efforts to modernise tax processes. The Income Tax Department has also been pursuing technology-led initiatives aimed at improving compliance, taxpayer services and tax certainty.

Sitharaman’s call highlights the potential role of independent research and professional expertise in examining tax policy and its wider economic implications.

The conference, organised by the International Tax Research and Analysis Foundation, brought together professionals and stakeholders to discuss emerging issues in taxation.
