The row within the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sparked public outrage, with activists and organisations staging a protest in Mandya demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstration, held at Jayachamarajendra Circle, was organised by Dalit groups and the Samana Manaskara Vedike (Forum of Like‑minded Organisations). Protesters raised slogans calling for transparency in the electoral process and protection of voters’ rights, citing objections raised by Election Commissioners over the functioning of the ECI and the revision of electoral rolls.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson M. Lakshmana urged the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognisance of the matter and order Kumar’s removal, arguing that the credibility of India’s elections is at stake.

The protest reflects growing public anger after reports of irregularities in voter roll management and alleged unilateral decisions within the Commission. Activists warned that continued erosion of trust in electoral institutions could undermine democracy itself.

With opposition leaders already demanding accountability, the Mandya protest adds momentum to calls for reforms and judicial intervention to safeguard India’s electoral integrity.
