Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his Loop Tour during his Philadelphia concert on September 19, speaking publicly about the situation in Gaza after days of criticism over the removal of rapper Macklemore from the tour.

Sheeran described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable” and said the scale of civilian suffering had deeply affected him. He also referred to what he described as systemic injustice in the West Bank.

The remarks came after Macklemore was removed from the US leg of Sheeran’s tour following pro-Palestinian comments during a September 4 performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Tour promoter Messina Touring Group said venue owners had informed organizers that Macklemore would not be allowed to perform at upcoming shows.

Sheeran had previously said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter and venues rather than him. Several supporting acts subsequently withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

At the Philadelphia show, Sheeran also expressed regret over how the controversy had unfolded and raised concerns about performers’ content being subject to venue scrutiny. He said he wanted his concerts to remain spaces focused on music, unity and humanity.

The controversy has also prompted pro-Palestinian demonstrations outside Sheeran’s Philadelphia concert, adding another dimension to the debate over political expression and artistic platforms.
