The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced new measures for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following a full‑bench meeting, the Commission clarified that the declaration attached to Form 6 will only be required during the SIR exercise, while the earlier format will remain applicable for fresh voter registrations outside the revision period. The move comes amid controversy over alleged “illegal” decisions and dissent within the poll body.
In another major development, the Maharashtra government declared drought in 265 of the state’s 358 talukas, based on a report from the Agriculture Commissioner. The prolonged rainfall deficit has caused widespread crop losses, particularly in Vidarbha, Marathwada, North Maharashtra, and the Pune division. Districts worst affected include Yavatmal (16 talukas), Jalgaon (15), and Ahilyanagar, Nagpur, Amravati, and Nanded (14 each).
The government resolution (GR) is expected to trigger relief measures, including financial aid, crop insurance claims, and support for farmers struggling with water scarcity.
