Apple is preparing a software update to fix a rebooting issue affecting some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users. The company has confirmed that the update is expected to become available early next week.
The issue causes affected iPhones to freeze and restart after an unsuccessful Face ID authentication attempt. Reports suggest that the problem is software-related rather than a hardware defect.
The bug does not appear to affect every iPhone 18 Pro user, although multiple reports have surfaced from customers experiencing unexpected freezes and reboots. In some cases, users have also found a panic log in the iPhone Analytics section within Settings after the device restarts.
The problem can occur when Face ID fails to authenticate the user. Testing reported by 9to5Mac found that the phone could become unresponsive to touch input before automatically restarting several seconds later.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max feature a redesigned Face ID system, with the infrared camera positioned beneath the display near the status bar. The new arrangement contributes to a smaller visible Dynamic Island.
Some customers had reportedly replaced their devices through Apple support after assuming the unexpected restarts were caused by defective hardware. With Apple confirming a software fix, replacing the device should not be necessary for this particular issue once the update becomes available.
The development comes shortly after Apple released watchOS 27.0.1 to address a separate random restart problem affecting the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.
