German sportswear company Adidas has started reducing roles within its technology organisation in India as part of a broader restructuring of its operating model.
Reports initially estimated that more than 350 employees could be affected at the company’s Gurugram technology hub, which has a workforce of around 700. However, Adidas said the reduction is expected to affect less than 20% of employees in its technology operations.
The affected positions reportedly include software engineers, data scientists and data engineers. Employees were informed about the changes during a town hall meeting on September 15.
Adidas said the restructuring is intended to simplify parts of its organisation, strengthen critical capabilities and align its workforce with changing business and technology requirements.
The company added that India remains strategically important to its operations and that its technology hub continues to support growth, innovation and digital transformation. Adidas also said it continues to invest in strategic capabilities and has open positions across the organisation.
The Gurugram facility houses Adidas’ local marketing operations as well as one of its Global Engineering Tech Hubs. The company has also expanded its presence in India, including the opening of a Global Business Services centre in Chennai in 2024.
The restructuring comes as technology companies globally adjust their workforce and operating models amid increasing adoption of artificial intelligence, automation and cloud-based technologies.
