The investigation into the death of a second-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has been transferred to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

The decision was taken on September 19, with police stating that an Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officer would lead the investigation. The move comes as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

On September 20, the Faculty Forum of IIT Bombay expressed condolences to the student’s family while extending support to Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who has been named in the FIR along with other institute officials.

The faculty body said Professor Doolla had carried out his responsibilities in accordance with academic policies approved by the institute’s Senate.

The Crime Branch probe is expected to examine the facts and circumstances of the case and determine the sequence of events. The allegations mentioned in the FIR remain subject to investigation, and no conclusion about individual responsibility has been established at this stage.

The case has drawn attention within the institute community as the investigation continues.
